Sustainability, Cradle to Cradle Certified™ and LEED

Making buildings beautiful while preserving the environment

Sustainable architecture has forever altered the way buildings are specified, designed and constructed. We offer the sustainable building products, resources and expertise you need to develop dynamic new and retrofit projects that save energy and harmonize with the environment without sacrificing beauty or durability. In fact, Vitro Architectural Glass (formerly PPG glass) was the first manufacturer to have its entire collection of architectural glass products Cradle to Cradle Certified™.

Whether you’re designing a brand new structure or renovating an existing facility by refurbishing exterior metal panels, replacing legacy glass or re-skinning the facade, Vitro Glass has the sustainable building products and design support staff to help you get the job done.

Vitro Architectural Glasses Cradle to Cradle Certified

In 2008, we became the first U.S. glass manufacturer to have its entire collection of architectural glass Cradle to Cradle Certified™. Today, even as the standard becomes increasingly rigorous, we offer more Cradle to Cradle Certified™ architectural glasses than any other float glass manufacturer.

Developed by McDonough Braungart Design Chemistry (MBDC) and administered by the Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute, the Cradle to Cradle Certified™ Product Standard evaluates products and their manufacturers based on achievement in five categories:

  • Material health—Product ingredients are inventoried throughout the supply chain and evaluated for impacts to human and ecological health.
  • Material reutilization—Products are designed either to biodegrade safely as a biological nutrient or to be recycled into new products as a technical nutrient.
  • Renewable energy and carbon management—The criteria at each level build toward the expectation of carbon neutrality and powering all operations with 100 percent renewable energy.
  • Water stewardship—Processes are designed to regard water as a precious resource for all living things and, at each level, progress is made toward the expectation of all effluent being clean enough to drink.
  • Social fairness—Company operations are designed to celebrate all people and natural systems, and progress is made toward having a wholly beneficial impact on the planet.

Our dedication to achieving the certification for our architectural glass products signifies our commitment to environmental stewardship and to developing and enhancing products that promote sustainable building.

Benefits of Cradle to Cradle Certified Products

As green building becomes more holistic, architects are seeking new ways make buildings integral to healthy ecosystems. One way to achieve this objective is through the use of products that are Cradle to Cradle Certified™, such as our architectural glasses.
With the launch of the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) v4, Cradle to Cradle Certified™ products have been written into the standard, creating two new avenues for project teams using Cradle to Cradle Certified™ products to earn points under Materials & Resources, Credit 4:  Building Product Disclosure and Optimization-Material Ingredients. These two options are detailed in the links below:
Option 1: Material Ingredient Reporting (1 point)
Use at least 20 different permanently installed products from at least five different manufacturers that use a USGBC-approved program (such as Cradle to Cradle Certified™) to demonstrate the chemical inventory of the product to at least 0.1% (1000 ppm).

Option 2: Product Manufacturer Supply Chain Optimization (1 point)
Use building products for at least 25 percent, by cost, of the total value of permanently installed products in the project that:
  • Are sourced from product manufacturers who engage in validated and robust safety, health, hazard and risk programs, which at a minimum document at least 99 percent (by weight) of the ingredients used to make the building product or building material, and

Vitro Architectural Glass: Environmentally Friendly and Energy Efficient

For decades, Vitro Glass has been committed to making products that meet our customers’ demanding performance requirements and help to sustain a healthy global environment. Since introducing the first spectrally selective glass in 1934, we have been a leading manufacturer of environmentally progressive architectural glass products that help boost a building’s energy efficiency and minimize its carbon footprint. In fact, we operate more oxy fuel-fired (energy-efficient) float lines than any other glass maker in North America.

Advanced architectural glasses, including Solarban® solar control low-e glasses and spectrally selective tinted glasses, contribute to sustainable building by transmitting high levels of daylight and blocking solar heat to minimize reliance on major energy consumers, such as artificial lighting and air-conditioning.

In a study using the country’s most sophisticated energy modeling software, Solarban® solar control low-e glasses were shown to reduce initial HVAC equipment costs and annual energy costs in a prototypical eight-story, window-walled office building by up to 13 percent when specified instead of less sophisticated glazing products, such as dual-pane tinted glass.

The same study showed that, depending on a building’s location, annual energy-related carbon emissions were reduced by up to 300 tons, enough to equal the yearly output of more than 50 passenger vehicles.

LEED Support Center

While the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) doesn’t certify individual building products, it does recognize that the selection of certain products can play a vital role in making a building LEED-compliant.

At Vitro Glass, we’re committed to helping you build green and earn LEED certification for your projects. Below are some resources that can assist you in the explanation and documentation of our glass products when pursuing a LEED project.

LEED Certification

Why Cullet May Not Be Recycled Content—This document provides an explanation of the definitions and requirements of the referenced standards for the recycled content of glass when pursuing LEED or other building rating certification.

Cradle to Cradle Certified Architectural Glass Products—We were the first U.S. float glass manufacturer to have its products recognized by the Cradle to Cradle Certified™ Products Program and offer more C2C-certified architectural glasses than any other float glass manufacturer.
